Substance Use Recovery and Workplace Safety Program now available to Summit County businesses

The County of Summit Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board announces a new partnership with the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation (BWC) to help employers in Summit County hire and retain workers who are in recovery from substance use disorders. The Substance Use Recovery and Workplace Safety Program reimburses local employers for costs associated with maintaining a drug-free workplace and supporting employees recovering from any addiction, not just opioids.

“We are excited to introduce this program to Summit County,” commented Jerry Craig, executive director, County of Summit ADM Board. “Especially during this uneasy time with the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical we take advantage of opportunities to support safe and sober work environments in our community. People may be more aware of addiction than they were a couple of years ago, but addressing this disease in the workplace will go one step further to support those in recovery and reduce stigma.”

The program reimburses employers for development and legal review of employer policies and procedures about substance use issues, training for employees to understand substance use and their employer’s related policies, training to equip supervisors and managers to better manage employees in recovery, and drug testing for prospective and current employees. The program also provides access to a free employee wellness incentive program, BWC’s Better You, Better Ohio!

According to the Ohio BWC, in a survey of more than 3,200 businesses and nearly 1,500 community leaders, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce found more than half are suffering consequences of substance misuse, including absenteeism, decreased productivity, and shortage of workers.
