The County of Summit Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health Services (ADM) Board has announced that the 10th Annual Recovery Challenge 5K and 1-Mile Family Fun Walk will take place May 20, 2023, at IBH Addiction Recovery Center (3445 S. Main St., Akron).

The event benefits the Summit County ADM Support Committee, which operates levy campaigns on behalf of the ADM Board. Levy funding provided by county voters ensures continued financial support of the Board’s network of 20+ provider agencies that offer mental health and addiction recovery services to tens of thousands of county residents each year.

“I am so proud of this landmark the Recovery Challenge has reached in its 10th year,” ADM Executive Director Aimee Wade said. “It is an event that truly brings out community spirit in support of those in recovery and the resources available to assist them.”

The Recovery Challenge course spans IBH’s 86-acre campus in southern Summit County, featuring obstacles that represent the challenges faced by those in recovery, such as a tire course, slip ‘n slide, and rock wall. Runners get started at 9 am, while a 1-mile Family Fun Walk begins at 9:15am. Early registrants receive a custom 5k t-shirt, and awards are given for top placement in the 5k for individuals and for teams.

This year also marks Race Director Mike Bullock’s final year overseeing the planning and execution of the event after serving in that role for a decade.

“Over the last ten years, I have watched the ADM Recovery Challenge not only raise money for the ADM Board Levy Committee, but also acknowledge and honor people who struggle with the disease of addiction and/or mental illness,” Bullock said. “As the outgoing race director, I could not be more proud of meeting our goals to raise money for the levy and raise awareness about recovery.”
